Day 3 & 4, US single distance champs
You can see the results of Sunday and Monday’s races listed here.
Sure, there were incredible results this last weekend, with Chad Hedrick & Shani Davis both breaking a pair of track records, that is what will go in the media. But what did it feel like to watch a whole slew of talented athletes willingly subject themselves to the punishment of the 3k/5k/10k?
As a pure sprinter, when I watch distance skaters I am always awed by the train wreck of beautiful technique meeting absolutely horrific suffering. I thought that I would do something that emphasized the human experience behind the often dry listing of results, every second in every race was earned by a pounding heart & burning legs. It’s easy to forget that.
I spent much of the flight home to salt lake messing around with some movies I took of the races, and this is the result. Enjoy!
(And no, that is not me in any of these photos, even thought that is my skinsuit on my friend Kirk)…. press the play button to get this show rolling.

And thanks to you, Andrew, for putting together such an awesome video for those of us who weren’t able to make it to Milwaukee, and for always putting such great words on your blog. It’s always a treat to read what you have here. Can’t wait to get back to SLC next month, although with the way ppl have been driving here with the weather change, I thought I was there. hahaha
thanks steph,
its worth noting in the video, that in the pictures showing Bart Schouten giving lap times to Derek Parra, that was taken on Sunday, the Packers were playing the Vikings, and Bart was coaching on the ice in his Vikings Jersey!!! they take their football REALLY seriously in Wisconsin, and Bart got lots of good natured kidding about that, and the vikings won too…
I was wondering what that get up was he had on. He always has to be joking about something, doesn’t he? Well, except when his whole team is spewing all over the ice. hahaha
thanks Andrew for the photos. It made the memories of this weekend come back to me while I’m in my 4 x 6 feet cube. I realized that I enjoyed myself this weekend and am thankful to have competed. I came up short of my goals for this meet but I am ahead of where I was last year at this point. This has motivated me to give my all the next two months.
This weekend was a measuring stick for one day in time. There will be another measuring stick on one other day in time.
