Live from Milwaukee

I am in my favorite Midwest town, the land of beer, cheese, and that odd religion headquartered up in Green Bay (led by St. Farve). I am getting ready to race the America’s cup event tomorrow. As I was doing my race-prep workout on the ice tonight, good friend and West Allis Speedskating Club webmaster Alice Hagen skated up to me, and said “hey, when are you going to do another post on your blog, I keep seeing Joey’s face every time I check when I am bored at work.”

Alice competed in Olympic trials in 2002, and kept an occasional blog of her efforts to qualify for the 2005 trials. She is one of those good folks of the skate tribe, who when not racing, is often volunteering at races. Everyone who has pored over the results & laptimes on the WASSC results pages, we should all pitch in with some great communal gesture for Alice, a lifetime supply of Powerbars, bicycle tubes, or something truly useful like that.

Sorry, I apologize… 4 days without a post… It’s been a busy last couple of days… Chad’s website, another job interview, valentines day, travel, etc etc etc…

Ok, the real reason is that I have struggled with what I wrote on the plane flying to Milwaukee. Sometimes as a writer you know when it’s good, yet I am blind as to the quality of the following post. Watching the “thrill of victory-and the agony of defeat” that is the Olympics never fails to get my insides churning. There has been a lot of churn recently.

Of course though, that is why we watch… Read more in the next post..

(p.s. I spoke to alice at the races today, she read this post, and said she prefers luna bars to powerbars! ha ha!)

  1. Yeah, Alice is definitely a “good egg” for the sport of speedskating and just generally, isn’t she?
I’m checking to see how the American Cup went for you. I didn’t make it over there because I was sick.
Hey, thanks for homage to Milwaukee and I will see you soon at the Pettit or Bella’s Fat Cat

  2. Hey, just wanted to add that a lot of people don’t realize who Alice is when they see the results on the west allis website. She’s busy like the rest of us with work and training, and when “they” don’t post the results immediately, that’s Alice who either couldn’t get the results right away or was extra busy at work that week. And when the results ARE there right away, she put in that work over the weekend while a lot of us are taking a nap.

  3. I have a suggestion, that anytime people want to see the results on the West Allis website, they IMMEADIATELY paypal Alice $5, or give her a Luna bar, in person…. She has been doing this update for so long with no one knowing its her…

Admittedly, I have checked the West Allis site 3 times today, to link the results from the America’s cup to this blog…

Alice, what do you think? Where should I send my paypal $5, or I will see you tomorrow evening at practice, what is your favorite flavor of Luna bar??

  4. Thanks, all my friends, for the pat on the back!

Results for the past weekend’s American Cup / Junior Sprints have been posted (www.wassc.org). I will get the other missing time trial results up as soon as I can - it’s past my bed time, so I have to call it a night! :)

  5. for the record, Alice’s favorite flavors of Luna bars are s’mores and oatmeal raisin!
