Its alright Ma, (I’m only bleeding)

Disillusioned words like bullets bark
As human gods aim for their mark
Made everything from toy guns that spark
To flesh-colored Christs that glow in the dark
It’s easy to see without looking too far
That not much is really sacred.

While preachers preach of evil fates
Teachers teach that knowledge waits
Can lead to hundred-dollar plates
Goodness hides behind its gates
But even the president of the United States
Sometimes must have to stand naked.

An’ though the rules of the road have been lodged
It’s only people’s games that you got to dodge

And it’s alright, Ma, I can make it.

-Bob Dylan, It’s alright ma, I’m only bleeding

I’ve been on a huge Dylan kick recently, somehow his words just seem to fit this transitional time of blustery spring weather, and the violent uncertainty in the world at large.

Here is the view of the wind torn spring sky over Salt Lake, click on it for a bigger panoramic image. This park is my new favorite place in the world, a good place for dryland speedskate training -or a picnic lunch, depending on your mood.

Sorry for the recent quiet on the blog, I have started training again, and my body is in complete shock from starting up Boris’ intense jump/pylometric program.

However it’s much better than the soreness I felt this time last year. Now I can walk after workouts! but it is quite a funny looking walk, and I eat advil like M&M’s, but at least I can stand!

(its alright ma, it’s just soreness)

Why is it that when you are experiencing pain (emotional or physical), certain musicians seem to make more sense? At least I am not on a cheesy disco kick, what kind of mood would bring that on?

Ok, gotta run to the gym for workout #2 today,

more soon….

  1. Where is this park? Is this where we went sledding?

  2. this is not the park we went sledding in, but it is close…

this park is on 11th ave & terrace hills drive, just above the cemetary….

It gets a lot of use, I have seen both soccer and indian/uk men playing cricket there in the summer… and that asphalt trail loop always has a walker/jogger or two on it.

the only typical thing missing from this picture is there always seems to be someone in that central grass area tossing a ball or frisbee for some happy and eager dog.

there are also deserted tennis courts up there, and that is where I usually practice my dryland

  3. hi Andrew,
what do you suggest - as practice on a exercise bike-for a long distance skater? Please help!

  4. Hi Andrew

    Looks like a great park.
Hope you are well, hmmm you said you had pain!!
I guess a skater is not too happy without pushing themselves to the extreme, yep I guess you are well;-)
Here’s wishing you a great Easter weekend from Norway.

  5. and for anyone on the log who doesn’t already know it, if you’ve just gotten dumped, country music is true and righteous, and balm to the soul, even if the rest of the time it’s guaranteed to lose you your lunch.

The blues was written for when you’re feeling pain, too.

The few musical inspirations I’ve had have all happened when my life was more or less in the toilet…

There’s music out there for, and from, almost every state of feeling, from ecstatic to psychotic.
