Zen 10: Chris Shelly, pt. 3

Part 3

What rocks about lake placid? What sucks? What is the single most incredible thing Chris has ever seen a human being do on skates? How does the emotional challenge of being a coach differ from what athletes go through?

  1. Kevin and I went up to the Connecticut Long Track camp 2 years ago in Lake Placid when Chris was there as the head coach of the camp. As inline speedskaters, we wanted to try another “branch” of our discipline and we had a great time! We thoroughly enjoyed meeting Chris and his family, and also took back some useful training tools and tips to use for inline (turncable, anyone??). The group of skaters who were there from all over the Northeastern US and Canada, together with Al and Dave, the coaches from the Ct. Speedskating club, made it an all around fun experience, mixing learning, skating and comraderie. And you know Kevin, Andrew, there was lots of talk with Chris about the “up and coming” talents in the inline world who may be making the cross to ice, or maybe should. When you see Chris, please pass on that we wish him the best of luck in his new position!
