Inzell & Technomads

A cool photo of one of the nicest 400m ovals there is. The Eisstadion Inzell, in Germany.

I like how the skaters are dissolving into the mist, and how the stands flow into the mountains. This is from the cool Dutch website coenwesselman.nl/, and yes, I asked him before using this picture.

Don’t speak Dutch? Just babel fish it.

Skating long track feels like a fuzzy, far off memory. A hazy, mythic place full of people who can do puma-like things at astonishing velocity.

On my 3rd cup of coffee, with a massive pile of work to do. I look across the field of laptops in front of me, at my “office” (the coffee shop down the hill from my house).

I’m surrounded by other Technomads & graduate students, people whose location really is their laptops; the mobile internet is a wonderful thing.

I am trying to remember exactly what skating fast on ice feels like, and failing. I’ve become an immobile coffee sucking plugged in helpless extension of my laptop.

I just know that I am looking forward again to that glide, that sound, the pressure of turns & the joy of slingshoting into perfect straightaways.

With that, I think my off season is over…. .

  1. That is a gorgeous photo! What I like about the two together, too, is that at the oval, everything is moving in an oval, and in the coffee place, everything is rectangular.

  2. Wow am I dreaming??? Please don’t wake me for a while….Need to enjoy such a wonderful place to skate.

    Thanks Andrew :)

  3. andrew, season over - time for ice-nostalgia, Heimweh for subtle skates on smooth ice.
Even in off season there is always hope: Italian soft ice.

Keep on pushing - may all your days be skating days

    enjoy
    Jules

    have a good summer!

  4. Hi Andrew,

The picture is like a dream! And it’s hard to imagine there putting a roof on the inzell oval. Together with Collalbo its the best place to train in the open air.

But it will be one of the fastest tracks in Europe. And that’s what it is all about, right? ;-)

  5. In Rochester facilitating a level 1 clinic with some really awesome new coaches and reliving the season, and missing it, really missing everything about it…

  6. Hey Andrew,

Are you going to the board meeting this weekend? You’re commentary to the event would be helpful to the skater, parent, and volunteer population. Primarily, informing the public of what otherwise may not be mentioned.

  7. Right on, L! Keep on pushing for honesty and full disclosure.

  8. I will be at the US speedskating board meeting…

and will try to do some of the same reporting I did last year..

and maybe make a comment or two myself if the moment is right, especially reguarding the online strategy (& complete lack therof) of our “dear governing body”

it will be a real challenge for me to maintain my usual “postitive” approach to things… hip deep in the quicksand mire of skate-politics…
