Mexico City/Lake Placid
Morning coffee in Mexico City, overlooking a brand new, football field sized ice rink, simmering in warm winter sun.

what dream did I wake from, catapulted into this? Or am I still half-asleep?!?!
Nope, the coffee is active in the brain, and what you are looking at is a HUGE ice rink in the middle of the famous Zocalo central plaza.
There will a massive exhibition this weekend featuring hockey, figure and speed skating, then the facility will be open for the public for a month of free ice skating.
How cool is that? Actually it’s about 70f/21c outside right now, but at night it falls to 50f/10c, and that is cold enough for ice. More info is here.
I am one of the speed skaters invited to take part. I’ve done some VERY strange things in my life, in fact I tend to seek them out. But this might just be the strangest, and of course, VERY blogworthy.
HUGE THANKS TO KIM & ERIC KRAAN!! & THEIR SKATE NOW SHOP!!
in other news…. THOUSANDS OF MILES AWAY… the lake placid oval is OPEN!!!
So many times I have been there, giddy & joyous on opening day. Ripping around like a kid on a rockin big wheel. You can see the webcam here. This is an image grab from ORDA webcam.
Although I am VERY happy to be where I am right now, I feel this longing hurt to be on the ice in dear ‘ol placid.
But it’s not just the ice, or seeing the Adirondacks from the rink, those little dots, tiny specs of people in this photo, I am quite sure some of them are dear friends of mine.
Jim & Marty & Kathy & Eric & John!!! Do you guys take better pictures that this grainy webcam?
anyway, enough blogging, I am going to go for a jog in the 70 degree weather, and do some LIVING!
note: to jess & family, my phone does not work, but the hotel has wireless, so email is fine
bonus image: this is the 400+ year old cathedral overlooking the rink, in the heart of Mexico City. It’s utterly ginormous.

Too cool! I called Kim to order some blades yesterday and she told me about your adventure…sounds awesome!
(Oh, and “giddy and joyous” is a perfect description of how I feel on Oval opening day every November, when I round the bend in the road and see the lights glowing above the Oval! You truly have a knack for finding just the right words to describe how this crazy sport/obsession affects us!)
Have a blast down there!
Ooooo, that would be beautiful for skating! Have a great time, Andrew!!
Wow you all have fun this is such a great thing for Eric and Arnim they deserve the recognition of their country. Since the sponsor is a mountain bike company I hope you all get to ride too? Can’t wait for the video……
Thats great ice skating in Mexico are you close to the beach Mexico sounds a little to warm for my blood I like it cold like it was today don’t want to even think about summer.. take care down there and have fun
Andrew,
LPNY…you bet I was in that shot!!!! Big crew from SWC was there, too. Cold and windy…just the way we like it. A bright sunny day with Mts Marcy and Algonquin looming in the distance. New ice so thin that you see the concrete beneath. Looking forward to having Nationals there in February. When will you be back? Have fun!
Marty
Eric,
Me traes un pinchi tequila! Le dices al Sebas que trucha con las chilangas!
pancho, el tequila ya me lo tome.
Las chilangas no fueron problemas para el, pero las Tapatias se lo estaban comiendo vivo!!
WOW wtf, that’s crazy, never in my life would I have ever dreamed of such a thing.
So now you jettreker, what do you for a living? I’m curious, man I’d love that freedom!
My boyfriend is Spanish lol…makes me think of him, he totally doesn’t like skating, watching or anything, such a shame.
Thanks for sharing!
Andrew,
Placid was as great as I ever remember it this past weekend, with some of the nicest people on the planet…….It would have been nice if you were here too
See you Soon.
Enjoy the Mexico Ice Trip!!!
