8am in Milwaukee
It’s 7am here in the Mountain West, 8am in Milwaukee. My coffee is half finished, and a thousand miles from here, warmup is underway for the first day of the fall long track world cup qualifier races.
This will be the first time in 5 years I am missing this race. If I didn’t have other mildly important things going on in my life, I’d be very sad.
I know just about every athlete on the start line. So many hopes & dreams, being judged in those few moments where the conscious mind sees this;

That ferocious moment where the nattering, fearful brain turns off, and lets the body do what it has trained it to do. Belief, ability, commitment, talent, all brewing together & turning into an electronic weighing on the scoreboard.
I send my deepest, heartfelt “good luck!” to everyone who is there. It’s too bad there are so few world cup spots. There are so many who work so hard for them.

skaters have been rocking some pretty awesome PB’s here this weekend. almost everybody has gotten at least one.
Tucker skated a 34.93 in the 500, just 2 hundredths off the track record, and only the second person to crack the 35 second mark since the track opened.
Shani skated a 1500 at 1:44.48, setting the track record, and Trevor Marsicano and Chad Hedrick both were under the old track record at 1:45.33 and 1:45.72 respectively.
But all this doesn’t matter, because the big news that we are waiting for is:
WHEN IS YOUR BABY HAPPENING!?!
sarah and I have been holding our breath for weeks!
-the crash
Yes, how long must we wait till the good news. I just got a call from my brother–he just had his first born today Zoe Elizabeth Demerjian. This stuff is very exciting and even more so for the proud parents.
Haha yeah seeing Jess last week at the world cup i would say she’s as ready as any of us to find out when the baby will come. Good luck to you both.
Wow. the ice here has been fast. They’ve got the fans cranked up so high it was a cool experience to listen to Olu play the national anthem while the American flag was flapping in the wind… indoors. I don’t know if you heard but this year was a little different for the distance guys. They incuded the team pursuit for anyone interested. They want to start seeing who skates well together and start putting some emphasis on it before the Olympics. It was my first team team pursuit and skating with guys like Matt Hotchkiss and Mike Stein, well let’s just say I had to hang on for dear life.
Overall a good meet though. everyone skated very well, and we all missed the Love train. US Championships maybe?
After eight years in Milwaukee, I moved to Amsterdam this summer. The new job has been so busy that the only reason I’m aware of my skates is that they happen to be in a basket that’s right next to our bed. This picture brought back a lot of memories of the past eight years. My Badger teammates and I would be using this ice by now, and I miss that routine. Eventually, I’ll make it out to the entirely open Jaap Edenbaan here in Amsterdam. It will be very different there, but maybe Bob Fenn is right that being outside makes one tougher and ultimately better. Thanks for this picture, and congratulations on the baby.
