Video from Marty
Marty Haire is the lone American attending Masters allaround worlds this year. He was the champion of the crazy-competitive 45-50 age group last year in Erfurt. The next 9 guys in the results after Marty were all Dutch.
Masters Worlds is being held this year in the new indoor rink in Bjugn, Norway. Marty arrived in Norway yesterday, and today he posted this video of him skating a lap and looking at the inside of “The Fosenhallen”.
Races start friday! Good Luck Marty!!
Does seeing this rink make you want to skate there? It does for me, and I almost was there on the ice too.
12 hours before I was going to get on the plane to Norway I realized there was no way I should go. Jess had improved, so I had been hopeful in the week leading up to my flight. And then her health fell apart again & I cancelled my ticket.
I know I made the right decision to stay & I don’t regret it. Even though I had had thought about this race almost every workout in the preceding year.
Weirdly enough, I don’t miss the opportunity to race, but I miss skating in new places like this, and I definitely miss the friends I have among the international masters community.
But there is always next year.

Hey Andrew… I was looking forward to finally meet you here, but obviously skating cannot be more than a pastime for us masters. Wish U and your family all the best, see you next winter in Baselga (we just voted that)

You would have worried the whole time you were there. It gives you another year to train. tony and i didn’t make it to the masters because he was sick and he still is. Pneumonia. There’s always next year.
Andrew … just here in Trondheim tonight. Tavi, his buddy, and I just skated at the oval here under the lights. A few of the masters who were in Bjugn were there too, skating 500s and 1000s in prep for Milw next year. Were staying at a the Hostel on the hill to the east of town. Nice place, Trondheim.
Busses and planes tomorrow for the long trip home and the start of another year long training cycle … keeps me young or ages me? …not sure which anymore, but I feel tired.
I’ve been thinking about you and Jess (and talking about you too) the whole time I’ve been here in Norway. Everyone has been curious and sympathic. Even people who don’t know you, but only heard others asking / talking. Everyone …EVERYONE… missed you. They know that you love Jess way more than skating and that Utah is where you belonged this past week.
My best to Jess and you. I’ll be in touch when get home and get my laundry caught up.
Marty
