Salt Lake City Summer Speedskating

My camera has been along with me this summer, and here and there, I’ve shot video of what a summer of Sspeedskating in Salt Lake is like. My wife was kind of bugged about the fact that I mix images of serious ice training with fun goofy inline stuff. But ya’know, that is how I experience the summer. Serious at times, goofy fun at others. It’s all skating.

Members of Kip Carpenters Swift Speedskating team were at the oval for two weeks, so they are all over the video.

Enjoy!

The thing I cannot communicate via YouTube, is the feeling one gets after skating on ice in a 40-45 degree building, becoming thoroughly chilled, then stepping outside into a 100+ degree day… Oh… My…. Oh… Wow… It is such a wild shock to the body. Even pleasant in a sick way.

  1. Veeerrrrrryyyyy cooooool video. (Sadly, the temperature outside is not. *groan*. I get cranky when it hits much past 80) :-/

  2. Cool video. The line dashes on the ice kinda looks like the highway when you are skating by them. And when you’re on the slide board loosing balance was nice to see - so many times you see everyone doing everything right and it’s good to see that sometimes you do fall - but you keep going and have fun. Nice job.

  3. Love the video!! :)

  4. aaaaaahhh summer…………great toes !!!…..thanks Andrew

  5. LIKE. =]

  6. I’m diggin’ those toes and bare legs, too! anything better than the fell of sunshine on bare skin? What is the music? Really interesting. Suggests that the sun is really pounding down….

  7. Thanks for the comments all…

Teri, I would never publish a video of someone else screwing up on the slideboard, but with me, of course!

Linda, music is something I came across on my wife’s ipod. Called “The Volkswagen song” by Master Cylinder.

When Salt Lake gets hot, ohmigosh!!

  10. Amazing stuff Andrew. Have not been on your site in a while and forgot how talented you are. So moving… Your composition and timing are insightful.

I have heard its an hour to produce per minute of output this cool. I hope you enjoyed the process as I believe many of us have and we appreciate your effort.

  11. Thanks for sharing some of your summer highlights. I just wish we in DC had a nice cool (perhaps, some would say, cold) oval to retreat into on a hot summer afternoon. Keep ‘em coming. I always look forward to your video escapades.

  12. lol oh kreg. so happy to be skating! love it!

  13. Hi Andrew,

Loved the video. Due to some stupid knee injury i haven’t been able to skate last season. I’ve been training hard to get back to the ice, in 3 weeks i’ll get to see if my technique has survived.

But this video really is inspirational! Beautifull shots of people executing one the most beautifull and most difficult form of movement a human can think of… and the do that on a slippery surface. Looking at your video, I just can’t wait to get back to the ice. No matter the struggle, it wil just be fun.

    We skaters are weird beings…
