Chad KPRC Interview

Chad Hedrick talks with KPRC in Houston about:

  • The conflict with Shani Davis
  • How the media attention ultimately will help speedskating
  • His upcoming 10,000m race
  • What the whole Olympic experience has meant to him.

In the middle of the interview, note that Derek Parra passes by, on his way out for a night of fun, and “The Exception” is staying in, resting before he faces the 25 grueling laps of the 10k. Press the play button to listen.

Sometimes when you see an athlete being interviewed, you can tell that they are in “professional media mode”. To me, this interview sounds like Chad simply being himself. He is intensely confident, and when he loses, he blames himself for not skating to his potential.

Some call that approach cocky or brash, but if your life experience included 50 inline world championships and multiple ice championships, you could internally be a dour pessimist and come to the same conclusions & approach. This is how Chad looks at the world, and for his whole life the world has confirmed this view.

  1. During these last 2 weeks of the Olympic games, I have fallen in love with Mr. Hedrick (As well as many other American people). He comes off to me as such a decent, sincere, fun-loving person that is passionate about his profession, and in today’s society, that is very rare…and he’s good to look at too, but that’s for another blog! Congrats Chad on your accomplishments in Torino, you’ve definitely made me proud to be a citizen of the Red, White and Blue.

  2. Thank you, thank you, thank you. I think your last paragraph says it best. I feel like I’ve spent the past two weeks defending Chad’s character, although it’s been my choice, and I just LOVE this interview. Eventhough I don’t know him well, I know people who do, and some of the things that people have decided about him are absolutely repulsive. I’ll just leave it at that. Thanks for sharing this interview here.

  3. I just have to say Chad Hedrick has a little fan club of about twenty girls in Big Rapids, Michigan. Everyday after he races, we have to recap what happened the night before and how hot he is;) Although we do not know him personally, we all feel the same, we feel as if he is one of the most passionate, dedicated and fun southern guys we have ever seen. We couldn’t get past the low-blow that Shani Davis did to him at the press conference! Chad handled it well because I know that most people would have explode. Chad has all golds in our book!We are all looking foward seeing him win in 2010!
