First snow

Why is it that the first snowstorm of the year never really “feels” too cold?
Could it be that the sense of wonder at how much the world can change overwhelms the protesting nerves?

We pass by this street sign every time we do the Salt Lake City Friday night skate. As I looked at this snow-spattered sign, it made me think of evenings where where the asphalt feels soft & sticky after baking in 100+ degree sun all day long.

I like the moon in the upper left corner of this shot & the blue, snow filled clouds encasing it. I did not notice the moon as I was taking the picture, but that is the fun thing about writing, photography, speedskating, or life. Sometimes if you keep your senses open, you discover surprising things along the way.
It’s waaay too early in the morning, and I am writing & photoshopping instead of crawling to the gym like I originally intended to.
Choices… Choices…. Choices… Much of life, like the turn of season, has nothing to do with our choices, but what we do during the day & early morning, we do have at least that….

Ditto what MARK said!!!!!!!!!!!
“Why is it that the first snowstorm of the year never really “feels” too cold? ”
I notice that most of the time, the first snow occurs during a relative warm spell! Here in Minne, we are experiencing our “first cold snap.” I survived an 8 degree bike ride home with a 20 mph headwind today and am now ready. for. anything….
that includes my first season of outdoor racing/training in 7 years…
We’re due for our first snow here in Minnesota on Saturday, maybe as much as 6″. The difference is that, here, the snow falls directly ON the oval, which could prove interesting should it still be snowing Sunday morning for time trials.
Still, I, too, love the snow!
Mel,
good luck! outdoor training will make you tough & strong!
the feeling of the first snow always contrasts so directly with the last, miserable, damp, slushy. snow of the year… of course one never knows if a snow is the “last” one, but usually snow in early April is greeted with a less than happy emotion.
This storm screwed up my plans I was hoping to go skate some of the high mtn lakes around Brighton ski area the ice was almost thick enought and it looked smooth as glass.
I miss skating at keystone they run 3 zambonies out there on the lake … on a nice morning its close to glass…
I used to appreciate the first snow so much more when I didn’t have to drive on it!!
Mel and Kaari, have fun with it for racing! (And just think, you have a very good reason to wear glasses
) Mel, I don’t survive much of anything in 8-degree weather, so you are already tough!
Oh, wait, “have fun with it” was intended to mean literally enjoy it. Not sarcastic. I know you know I’m cold all the time, but yes, even I can consider racing in crazy weather fun.
ooh, a frozen lake, i want it!!!!
speaking of “first”: check out the opening, December 1, of the 5K open air speedskating course in Holland: http://www.flevonice.nl/flevonice
Carla and Andrew, thanks for the well-wishes. and carla, I remember my first really “shockingly refreshing” experience outdoor skating-we were driving up to calgary from salt lake and stopped in butte on the way. temp was about 10 degress, it was nighttime, and after a pleasant skate in a winter coat and warmup pants, i shed all my outer layers down to just the skinsuit i had on, no layers underneath!-to time for a 300m. what a blast!
It’s suppose to snow here tomorrow!!!!!!!! We never get snow so I’m so excited, I hope I don’t have to go to work!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Beautiful. But I want to see rink pics lol
*hugs*
And here, it’s been wintry - daytime temps just in the 70s and occasional torrential rains. My first year ever with NO snow. But I saw guys out in 12′ surf not long ago and that was cool!
Andrew, thanks for the sweet words on my last comment. Throw a snowball or two for me!
Aloha
Kate
p.s. the Hallmark people should LOVE this exposure! Nice design, too.It has lots of flow…
