Wireless and the state st diner

Coffee, eggs, sausage, 1950’s decor, chatty waitresses, the state street diner is a true diner, not a chrome-y just opened knockoff… Close your eyes… –Smell & hear the sputtering grill in your imagination, and you are pretty much there. Never closed, This Diner has been here since the 1930’s, serving both college students kicked out of the bars at 2am & Sunday post-church breakfasts. It’s a wonderful place. A place where the town and gown (Town=blue-collar Ithaca residents, gown=students/faculty/college-types) can both meet on neutral ground and chow on cheeseburgers.

And they now have free wireless Internet connection!!!!! This to me this is a sign that the ultimate triumph of wireless is at hand, that a place like this realizes they will attract more customers if they have it.

I am now ensconced in a corner of the diner, on my 4th cup of weak coffee, one bite of sausage away from finishing breakfast, and happily working on the welcome to spring message & graphic on the Dimon Sports website.

Of course, this is Ithaca, so the waitress wears a livestrong wristband, and queries me on my Mac, she just got one and can’t get used to it… But at least she is humming along to the country music piping in on the radio.

rainy day bike racing flashback

What a sloppy, nasty day outside. It is maybe 40, windy, and pouring. You can see the live view of Cornell here. or just glance at the still image on the right. Yesterday I went out for a wonderful ride, swooping around the Ithaca hills (note to coaches: while keeping my HR as low as possible, I promise), positively joyous at climbing and descending.. But it was warm and dry yesterday, and I am glad today that I am not a bike racer.. At this moment though, all over the northeast, there are probably a thousand men and women out there racing today and suffering in this slop, proving something to themselves, as bike racing usually begins in earnest the first weekend in April.

Andrew at the MIT fall criterium, 1992, powering out of a rainy cornerI actually used to really love racing in this crap. I was VERY good at it (more than half the races I won on the bike were in foul weather), mental toughness mixed with youth, insanity & off road bike handling skills were a good skillset to have when there was standing water in the corners, oil lifting off the pavement, manhole covers slick as ice, and your mouth filling with salty tasting grit from the rear wheel of rider in front of you.

Sometimes just staying with the leaders, proving yourself determined enough to stay at the front of the peloton & fighting for position, that is victory enough, no matter if you make the podium/win money that day. The low-bodyfat, pure athlete greyhounds so common in road bike racing tend not to do well in nasty rainy weather. These are days for the hard dogs, days for Pit Bulls, Rottweilers, & Siberian huskies. Woof!!

I miss it, and I don’t miss it

(more warm coffee please… thanks!! hmmm, wow, is here a flood watch for upstate NY today?? There is?? Cool…)

dog lead blog

Where do you lead me, my dear dog/blog, beside the rushing waters of glinting bandwidth? Where do the words beckon? How does the world flow, in and outside of my own self?

I like what blogging does to the mind.. A professor once said to me that a poem is the residue from poetry… Let me translate that from the academeese: the moment of inspired composition, the thrilling moment of writing something new & getting it right, is poetry. The poem what comes from that moment, the poem is just like the track a wildebeest leaves in dirt, but its not the beast itself.

So what is blogging? Why is it so infectious that suddenly we novelize our lives, and observe and think aloud on paper.. Why is it that my brother, my friend chris, my buddy Ulises, and another friend of mine who I admire but publishes VERY anonymously, so I shouldn’t link to her, suddenly find the desire to touch that hotwire of the wildebeest of blog (maybe it’s a different animal for others, maybe a dog or bird or bison…)

I don’t know, but its beautiful today, the sun is glinting off of fall creek, my dog Lilly is so happy to be outside her tail is almost spinning circles with every joyful step. Spring is coming, poking through the thawing ground. My own life just feels right today, both in the logical and illogical realms.

From the logical side of my life, I took a look at my projected finances this next coming year, as I aim on training close to full time to gived my best shot at Olympic trials. I now have an earnings target I must shoot for this year with my web design work, its high, but not unachievable!

Illogically I did my monstrously hard, Boris dictated, Russian Jump program yesterday, and my body really liked it. It was hard, but I can feel strength improvement in the burning throne of the sprint-centric skating posture. Also, at that grandest level of illogicality, I feel loved today, from many directions. My wife, friends, clients, all think I am a worthwhile use of organic material, the sun smiles today, and I do too!

And yes, I thought up most of this while walking Lilly. Dog is my co-pilot for today.

salt lake gloom

I am not sure why I dislike Salt Lake City, and why I have such a strong & depressive reaction to it sometimes…

the image posted on this page is an early morning shot I took last July of the mountains that loom over the town. Salt Lake is a place of simply stunning physical beauty. It has the fastest indoor speed skating track in the world, and the typical amazing mountain west climate (amazing to an east coast fella like myself).

When I first moved to Colorado in 1993, I fought it in my heart for a while. The big sky, the massive blizzards that melt away in a day, the dry heat of summer, the moods of the rockies that constantly changed like my own moodyness within the spin-cycle hurlybury of grad school. But I stayed for 8 years, and came to truly love that place and the gentle climate.

So why am I fighting Salt Lake in my heart? Am I simply fearing change? of embracing the uncertainty of pouring my whole self into Olympic trials, into a town I don’t know? There are so many good things in salt lake, I have terrific coaches who want to work with me, I have many skate bums for friends, the beauty of the place, is again, simply stunning…..

But last night driving around town with my wife in pouring rain (Jessica is pretty excited, personally and professionally, about moving here), talking about if we should rent or buy some cheapo house, I just fell into this depression, this vacuum of despair, and I went silent as a statue, and felt about as alive as one too..

Salt lake does have a particularly hideous kind of western urban big-box store, gated community, ticky-tacky tract housing sameness some areas. The Mormons are not a factor in my mopery, as my life & self is separate from their theocracy.

But I do not understand this black stone in my heart about salt lake. Maybe I know so little about it, my fears rush in to fill the empty space. Like the water table filling a quarry pit. Ask me in 8 years how I feel about Salt Lake.

so so so so dumb!

being the smart fellow that I am, I wanted to upgrade wordpress 1.2 (the blogging technology that i use) to wordpress 1.5, the latest release… of course I end up killing my blog entirely, mostly because of my own errors!!! luckily I had viewed it earlier in the day, so I dragged out and saved the cached copy, so I am rebuilding right now…

part of learning anything is the possiblity of making “kill it” mistakes.. I guess I am lucky though, in my wifes upcoming profession (veterinarian), if she makes a mistake, something dies!! but then again, tech-heads don’t get to save lives either, or cut the nads off of puppies… sigh…

A blizzard named bart

we are just getting pasted by a blizzard right now, winter warnings for 24 hours here.. Through tonight… its a small flake blizzard, but they are very wet and heavy, the kind that makes great snowballs, packs down into concrete rapidly, makes the tress bend, and creates insane slush…

I have always wondered why we give hurricanes the honor of a name, but not other weather phenomenon, like blizzards, or tornados, or heck, even really beautiful sunny days! why is it only catastrophic weather given the honor of a name? this was struck home to me a few years ago when a hurricane hit the southern states, and by the time it came up here, it was just a really hot, humid, one day blast of low hanging clouds and occasional rain. Everyone was mentioning the hurricane’s name, and it was a weather non-event, really (I mean, rain? Ithaca? omigosh, sooo unexpected!!!!)

Today we are right in the jaws of one pretty monstrous blizzard, here is jess cleaning her car this morning, as she was getting out her snow brush, she was saying, “boy this feels like a cave in here”

as I was finishing the shoveling, and she was shoveling off her car, our neighbor Deidre walked by, and I made my observation to her that “we name hurricanes, but we don’t name things like this!”

Deidre replied: “I lived in Florida for twenty six years, and frankly, hurricanes are not a big deal, unless its that one in every ten years hurricane, if you live in a concrete house, its pretty much a non-event.. maybe 6 hours that you don’t go outside. I have been in Ithaca for a few years now, and I still just find this weather simply awesome..”

looking at the slush coating the street, and the cars fishtailing about… we agreed that this blizzard should have a name, I offered bart as the name of the blizzard, Deidre agreed, saying Bart is a fine name…

The great thing about snowstorms, is that they have such varied personalities depending on which direction you look.. and now I can directly blame Bart as an individual with this cruel and beautiful multifaceted personality, I mean all these pictures were all take within a few minutes of each other, each is has a unique feel. Yet it’s all Bart!

Bart the clothier of trees
Bart the changer of my street
Bart the bringer of shoveling inspired heart attacks!
Bart the brown slurry paste slush monster!
The contemplative walk in the snow thinking face
Bart the ever changing!
Bart the weather channel ratings god-o-the-moment,
All hail Bart, the inspirer and destroyer!
Bart! the salt on the back of black dogs!
Creator of potholes
Bart Calls!
The rumble of snowplows is our reply…

etc
etc
etc….

I am glad I don’t skate outdoors much anymore, the second metric race I ever did was against US national team skater chris callis in a screaming blizzard like this, in lake placid……

the XC skis are calling me today… Onward!!

the 6 species of coffee shops

I am sitting in one of the best examples of the genus/species “cheery morning independent coffeeshop”, if you are one of the fortunate few who live in or frequent gimme coffee in Ithaca NY, you know what i mean… gimme coffee has wireless internet, phenomenal coffee they roast themselves, and its a two block walk from my house…..

Successful coffee shops must have personality, and gimme coffee certainly does, its part of their whole business ethos. Even a starbucks has a very carefully crafted personality. What makes a great coffee shop? that has entirely to do if the coffee shop personality matches your personality….

from my memory of the physical and psychological geography of this country before the explosion of the coffee shop craze, it seemed that coffee really was a gas station thing, or a mandatory drug consumed at home before the drive to work or during finals.. there was little “experience” to coffee, except for the soaring sensation of the drink itself…

if I were a biologist, trying to classify the genus/family/species of “coffee drug delivery mechanisms”, and what are the distinctive characteristics of each, it might go something like this:

1. Cheery morning independent coffee shops: bright, early AM hours, clean, wood floors, frequently plays folk/dylan & light rock, sometimes serves more complicated sandwiches too, elegant pastries/scones/bran muffins are a must, a very diverse clientele, art on walls is gentle impressionism or art photography involving extreme closeups, if they have wireless internet there is often a schmo like me with a laptop in the corner “working”. Always has soy milk available.

2. Upscale/corporate coffeeshops: corporate, steel trim here and there, sells the NYT/USA today/local paper, often carpeted floors in the table section, matching tables, monstrous pastry selection, plays unidentifiable soft music, clientele is usually middle aged professionals, or people with lots of money, people are fervently talking, or reading the business section of the newspaper.

3. Arty collage punk coffeeshops: dark walls, if you can see the walls from underneath the art, must have wireless, often has smoking section, late late late PM hours, mismatching furniture or tables, plays techno-trance-edgy-rock-vibe music, floor looks cheap, whatever it is, food is often out of stock, maybe they sell wrap sandwiches and pizza too, chaotic is a sign of the genuine, the owner is probably younger than you, so is all the clientele, usually has at least 1 or 2 drinks that might be fatal, as they contain 4-7 shots, there is usually a customer in the corner writing in a journal.

4. Wannabe gas stations: 35 airpots of gourmet coffee to choose from, half the airpots are empty, some of the condiments are out, and the coffee can vary between passable and dirty water.. floor is linoleum, no seating, sells krispy kremes/doughnuts as well, music? hah!

5. Drive through “drugs to go” coffeeshop:
usually a kiosk near a road, mandatory entertaining name, the floor is your own car, building usually painted red, or yellow, or other bright color to attract attention of sleepy eyes.. think a fishing lure, same color palette, the music is your car radio/cd player, the coffee usually makes your heart pound immediately due to extreme caffeine content.

6. Deli Coffeeshop: these places really started out as sandwich shops, and their menu/layout reflects this, but they discovered the insane profit margin of coffee, and shifted their focus a bit to attract this lucrative crowd of addicts.. name has nothing to do with coffee, large coolers of sandwiches/salads/pastries, 100% food service linoleum floor, no music, sometimes these are in strange locations.

Why am I expounding about coffee shops?? I am in a 4 week break from serious training and its driving me nuts… its as much a psychological thing as a physical “healing” from what I have done to myself over the last year, my body naturally de-trains quickly, and complains to me every step of the way… when I asked one of my coaches “how much should I train” he said “as little as you possibly can.. a good chunk of myself, physically and emotionally is bound up in working out… so not working out is REALLY hard… I mean I am doing some easy XC skiing, and light lifting and ab work, but its almost nothing compared to my usual twice a day efforts..

does this seem crazy? Olympic trials are less than 10 months away, shouldn’t I be training my brains out? actually, one of the fascinating things about the human body is that even though our minds love routine and patterns (how many gym-inhabitants have done the same workout every gym trip since they joined?) to improve a physical performance capacity we must constantly break routine and habit…

as soon as we have adopted to one type of physical stress, we really have to change the stress to get better.. its a basic concept of training periodization, I change how I lift every 4 weeks, for example… I have been in a routine and habit of training for a year now.. so I need to break the stress and habits of training for a bit, to reach higher fitness levels later… even Lance Armstrong doesn’t ride much for a month… the soul needs it too, I love to skate, so when I get a little sick of putting them on, (and I was the last month of the season) its time to take a break..

hmmm, my coffee cup is empty… time for more!! also I think i will mess about with the header of this blog, put a more atmospheric image in there..
